The Smoke King - Maurice Leitch
This was a bookswap acquisition, picked up because I was intrigued by the blurb and the overall setting sounded interesting. Sadly, the book itself didn't work anything like hard enough to grab my attention.

Set in World War 2 Ulster, The Smoke King is about a murder that gets blamed on three Black GIs stationed outside a small village - one of the GIs is on the run and is hidden by his lover, a local woman with three small children. The murder is investigated by Sergeant Lawlor, a disillusioned police officer who somehow refuses to be taken in by the hype surrounding the murder and is determined to establish what actually happened.

I think I got about halfway through before I decided I really didn't care what happened to any of the characters. It's clear Leitch has done his homework when researching the period, as both the relationships and the characters themselves feel very real, but sadly the pacing didn't work for me and I lost interest.
